Arch pain, also known as arch strain or arch discomfort, is a common foot condition characterized by pain or discomfort in the arch of the foot. The arch of the foot is the curved area along the bottom of the foot that spans from the heel to the ball of the foot. This arch is formed by the bones, ligaments, and tendons of the foot and plays a crucial role in supporting body weight and providing stability during activities like walking, running, and standing.
Arch pain can result from various causes, including:
- Body weight can increase the load on the arches of the feet.
- Trauma or injury to the arch of the foot, such as a sprain.
- Engaging in activities that put excessive stress on the feet, such as running or standing for long periodsm can lead to arch pain due to overuse or strain of the arch muscles and ligaments.
- Abnormal biomechanics of the foot such as flat feet or abnormal pronation, as the lack of arch support can strain the muscles and ligaments in the arch area.
- Wearing shoes that do not provide adequate arch support or cushioning can contribute to arch pain, especially if the shoes do not fit properly.
- Certain medical conditions, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.
- The causes of arch pain include: weight, a foot injury, overuse, abnormal biomechanics of the foot (e.g. flat feet or abnormal pronation), footwear, certain activities, inappropriate training and medical conditions (eg. Rheumatoid Arthritis).
If your arch pain is causing you concern, you may need to book an appointment for a Lower Limb Musculoskeletal Assessment. This Assessment is a series of clinical tests to determine the underlying cause of the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. At the end of the assessment, our Podiatrist will give you a treatment plan which may include rest, activity modification, anti-inflammatory products, sports massage, stretching, strengthening, acupuncture, strapping, steroid injection, ultrasound, orthotics, extracorporeal shockwave therapy or new shoes.
